Ministry is Simple: Love God, Love People

    by Tom Harrison

Our axiom this week is: “Ministry is simple: Love God, love people.” This is what Jesus tried to teach His disciples and was core for the New Testament church. While the concept is not difficult, the application can be quite challenging. Our natural default is to love, please and serve ourselves. We are born into the kingdom of self, and we try to organize life to our advantage. Much of the battle we fight as followers of Jesus is the choice of which kingdom (ours or God’s) receives our allegiance. Our ways are not God’s ways (Isaiah 55:8-9). What Jesus taught and practiced is astonishing. I realized during Holy Week that if I knew I would die within 24 hours (like Jesus), the LAST thing I would do is wash the feet of petty and competitive disciples. Our ways are not God’s ways. We prefer our own script, not God’s. Yet, when we do it God’s way, the result makes us wonder why we don’t always follow His script: God IS love. That love results in joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. Some of the fruit of the Holy Spirit is evident in our relationship with the Lord, but it is also evident in our relationship with others. Jesus asks us to experience His love and to love our neighbors as ourselves. As we so often reference: our mission is Helping Others Follow Jesus.
