The Magnificent Story

I want you to be in a Magnificent Story small group. To join a group: asburytulsa.org/joingroup. To start a group: asburytulsa.org/facilitator. Invite a friend. Have a study at your house. This study lasts six weeks. If you are starting a group, we want you to join us for at 12:15 pm lunch this Sunday in the CLC, where the author, James Bryan Smith (Jim) will share some additional information about leading your small group. Jim speaks in all three services this Sunday. Our new sermon journal is tied to “The Magnificent Story.” We have 63 groups so far.

This Sunday’s message will cover the first two chapters in “The Magnificent Story.” It describes how the gospel (“good news”) of Jesus Christ is so easily overlooked or turned into more of a “bad news” story. Jim had both of these experiences while growing up. First, as a United Methodist congregant with a pastor who thought the Church was just about doing good. Jesus was rarely mentioned. Then, he experienced a campus ministry that was full of “do nots” (legalism). The first ignored the Gospel and the second made it scary. Both presentations are shrunken from the original message of the Gospel. I love the subtitle of the book: “Uncovering a Gospel of Beauty, Goodness, and Truth.” The Gospel is beautiful, good and true

Homecoming was wonderful! We saw so many folks who returned for the first time in a long time. I also had the privilege to talk with several people who were here for the very first time. As Daniel said in his message, “Most all of us are here because someone invited us.” Who could you invite?

We also have our Wednesdays at Asbury beginning tomorrow (September 1) with many ways to participate. Learn more at asburytulsa.org/wednesdays

Our readings this week tell the Magnificent Story of Jesus, primarily from Mark’s Gospel. Sunday’s text is from the “Love Chapter” of 1 Corinthians 13.

    Monday: Mark 1:21-28
    Tuesday: Mark 2:1-12
    Wednesday: Mark 9:14-29
    Thursday: Mark 10:17-34
    Friday: Mark 15:1-5
    Saturday: Luke 5:1-11
    Sunday: 1 Corinthians 13

    See you Sunday,

    Tom Harrison
    Senior Pastor
