We are His Children

When He calls me, I will answer,
When He calls me, I will answer,
When he calls me, I will answer,
I’ll be somewhere working for my Lord.

I woke up several mornings in humid Uganda to the sound of children’s voices singing that simple song in unison across the campus of the children’s home where I was serving. Singing was the first thing they did each day as they awoke. It was simply heavenly. Seriously, it humbled me.

I wake up begrudgingly. I’m usually: Don’t talk. Coffee. Grrrr. Huh? The children reminded me, “Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth! Serve the LORD with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!” (Psalm 100:1-2)

God calls us His children. Jesus told His disciple to have the faith of a child, to become like a child to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. (Matthew 18: 1-3) At that time the disciples came to Jesus asking, “Who is the greatest is the Kingdom of Heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” Basically, we’re not supposed to come before Him with a complex plan of action. Just the willing, trusting heart of child who is eager to learn something new at school.

Loving and caring adults guide and nurture children. We don’t let them flounder. We prepare them and encourage them. Yes, we challenge them when necessary, but we are there. So, our Heavenly Father is there for us when we are feeling overwhelmed by work for His Kingdom. This world and its needs are overwhelming. Where do we begin? Do I have enough faith? Are you really there God? Did I just ask that?

When, I teach or guide my kids, all I ask is that they are willing and have a good attitude. Sometimes they need a reminder. It’s not much different with us following Jesus. Be willing. One step at a time. God is in control, not me. He sees the big picture. He’s got the details. Trust Him. Lean on Him. Read His word. Pray. Listen. Follow it. Do it. See a need. Help. Serve. Love.

Have the faith of a child. Say yes.
