WOMEN: Helping Others Following Jesus

    May 4, 2021 | by Tom Harrison

The Fifth Commandment is: "Honor your father and your mother.” It is also the first commandment that comes with a promise: “That your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” (Exodus 20:12) This Sunday is Mother’s Day. Some of my message will be to honor my mom, who went to be with the Lord on April 20.  There is so much to say about moms. I hope you will be with us in worship. Only Dr. Luke recognizes the importance of the women who supported the disciples and Jesus’ ministry. Luke 8:1-3 is our preaching text this week. “Loving Jesus” is both an adjective (“Jesus is loving”) and a verb (we get to respond to Jesus’ love, too).

It was wonderful to recognize our graduating seniors this past Sunday. As I reminded them, “Show me your friends—I’ll show you your future.” That’s a saying that is true for any age.  Our friends have an enormous influence on us. “Don’t be deceived: Bad company ruins good morals.” (1 Corinthians 15:33) The opposite is true, too: “Good company builds good morals.” We will share the same values, vision, language, interests and habits as our friends. I believe those who are following Jesus find the best company in the church. We are all headed in the same direction.

Remember the 7 Pillars of Parenting:

    • COME (be in worship)
    • PRAY (our first membership vow)
    • PLAY (have fun)
    • EAT (got to do it—so do it with family on a regular basis and without screens)
    • GIVE (teach kids how to be generous with their money)
    • READ (this is the best way for them to achieve academically)
    • SERVE (consider serving together in AsburyKids and Asbury Students —we are recruiting now)

    Our readings this week:
    Monday: Luke 8:1-3
    Tuesday: Matthew 27:55-56
    Wednesday: Mark 10:35-45
    Thursday: Luke 23:44-56
    Friday: Luke 24:1-12
    Saturday: Acts 1:12-14

    See you Sunday,

    Tom Harrison
    Senior Pastor
